Sixth plate ambrotype of an African American woman.

Wish that I knew her story, but this one was not identified. I really like the character that shows through on her face. The image carries a slight tint to the hands and face. Housed in a poor condition half case that has seen better days.

This image dates from the Civil War or just before.

I wish I knew her story too!! The wife and I took a plantation tour years ago at Brookgreen Gardens S.C. They showed us a Slave graveyard on the land in a swamp. and told us that they held the funerals at night as daylight was to work time. Plantation land was too valuable so the graveyard was the edge of a swamp!!!
Grave markers were broken pottery etc. whatever they could find. There was also
Military Bronze and Marble markers there. Desendants of slaves could be buried there too!!! Solders Too!!!
There was one Fancy Statue Marker 1700's for a Women Slave!! She must have been well thought of by the plantation owner. But Still buried in the swamp!!!
Tour really brought that history into focus!!

I keep looking at this wonderful picture and thinking that she has features of an American Indian. Do you think that's possible rather than African American?
    8. scottvez scottvez, 6 years ago
Anything is possible. She certainly could be of mixed ancestry.

I had the same reaction as Watchsearcher concerning her ancestry.
