This is a picture of my hometown in 1890. My daddy was on the Board of Aldermen for years and found this treasure in some old papers. No one seemed to care if he kept it. It has, since then, become a valuable treasure to others from my hometown. I have the original and several others have paintings or copies. The story about the store on the right is that a panther had been terrorizing the area. The animal was very illusive, but managed to kill many livestock. Something had to be done, so one brave gentleman managed to track the animal and kill him. He's hanging from the left side of the porch on the building. I was told that that's what prompted the picture being taken. My grandfather was the first postmaster and delivered mail on horseback. He's told stories about shooting panthers from his horse and having to have my grandmother knock ice off his overcoat when he got back home. Adds a bit more to the delivering of mail regardless of "snow, sleet or hail."
