This steel bar has 1 fixing bolt it would seem it may have been attached to an edge, maybe as a guide or to protect.

I'll guess its a thing to help protect (as you sorta suspect?) a corner of an old carriage, wagon, or cart of some sort...?

How big is your mystery?
Horseradishman, it's 465 mm x 50 mm and very heavy.
The head of the bolt is made to fit smooth & flush so something can roll or slide smoothly over it. Still say it is a knife rest for a wood lathe. (A large lathe)
I would not think it to be for a lathe. Lathe tool rests have a fixed post that mounts in a swivel base. This is 18 inches long, they do make rests that long but over 12 inches they have two fixed posts usually. I have them up to a foot long for my lathes and find this being a rest difficult to believe. Even back as far as 1914 they weren't built this heavy nor did they have up swept ends.
I also have wood lathes and metal lathes and have not seen a rest like this. Protective edge seems possible.
I am wondering maybe a reversable tooth for a earth moving bucket? Can't find an example tho. Any history Monty? Where found, etc?
Are the ends "up swept" ends or is that an illusion ? Is it straight along the convex side ?
