DIANA POTTERY PTY. LTD.. 122 Marrickville Road, Marrickville. Marrickville is a suburb of Sydney, NSW ..... my home town. I believe this highly quirky rabbit was designed by Ken Day .... an important figure at Diana Potteries. Ken Day began work for Eric C. Lowe in 1939 at a new, unnamed venture at Marrickville that became Diana Pottery. Their later designs normally have an impressed letter and model number. In this case it is A-18. The A is for animal I think. Why a rabbit ??? It perhaps relates to the plague of rabbits that took over the countryside resolved by myxomatosis. In Australia, the virus was first field-tested for population control in 1938. A full-scale release was performed in 1950. It was devastatingly effective, reducing the estimated rabbit population from 600 million to 100 million in two years.

      A virus, mate. Nasty. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myxomatosis

The hole had no real function but was part of the slip cast design.

May I toss in my 2 cents worth regarding the hole in fires ceramic pieces?
I believe it is for venting during the firing process. If a hollow item being fired did not have a hole made into it, it would break during firing.

Many thanks Mrs Tyndall and Watchsearcher too for those kind comments. I agree Watchsearcher with your idea totally. But it does not need to be that big as such. some near solid pieces are seen save for the smallest of holes. with commercial pottery I think it also has to do with the economies of slip casting.
    14. Watchsearcher Watchsearcher, 6 years ago
With skip casting, you do have to have a hole big enough to pour out excessive slip so that probably accounts for the large size of the hole.
