Greetings. I have a small leather bound (un)hinged daguerreotype of a union soldier. Inside on facing side the velvet has impressed words. I am reading J M YOUNG / 115 OR 145 8TH NY / NEAR 17TH STREET / NEW YORK. Does anyone have any information they can share based on what you see, what he's wearing, etc? His cuffs are unusual...I tried to find 'like' images online. He also has on plaid pants, hard to see. I'm sure they were his own and not gov't issued or am I wrong? The image isn't the clearest or darkest, but it's very compelling. And any idea on rank? Thank you all so much...I am researching this for my sister, I have no idea what I am looking at!!! He is an early war New York soldier-- the cuff trim and uniform are typical of NY. Also the photographers information confirms.
His hat has a Company letter "B" and the Regiment # that I cannot read. I'll try and decipher when I have some more time.
Your photograph looks to be an ambrotype based on the emulsion ring and losses along the matting. An ambrotype is on glass and is a photo negative that appears as a positive when backed with black.
The extra equipment makes your image desirable-- the tin drum canteen and the knapsack with blanket roll/ oil cloth cover.

His expression is full of pride and I also think trepidation. To think he probably held this himself is unreal...thank you again.

He is a soldier in the 79th New York. Taken in may of 1861. Would you interested in contributing your image for a book? I'm currently writing one on this regiment.
