I bought this recently and think it is a neat piece. It is some sort of locket or vinaigrette? Also, not sure what the blue residue inside is. I tried to scrape some with a toothpick and it comes out as dust. Any ideas about this item. Any info welcome.

At first I thought a Compact, but way too small, and is that a hole in the top? Got me stumped! :^D I hope we find out! It's nice, thanks for showing Mrstyndall! :^)
Wow, this is super nice. That dark blue residue has me puzzled too. It's definitely old and probably was worn as a pendant. That is a mirror I see, correct? So pretty!

Bill, in the first pic, there is a tiny hole in the center of the piece. Hope to find out some more about this too :)
I think I might have figured it out, or lead in a direction. You might be correct with a scent locket/vinaigrette, but add Mourning, it could have had a stone set in that hole, and the other side was for an image of the one lost? I'm trying! Good Luck! :^)
The hole might be for getting the scent, without opening the locket! :^)
Bill, that thought had crossed my mind about getting scent through that opening too. But just not entirely sure. Still perplexed about that blue stuff inside, wonder if it was some type of perfume or something. It almost looks like dried ink, but don’t know why that would be in there.

I think your mourning thought is most likely correct. It makes sense! What every it was, it certainly IS gorgeous!
