I found this at an estate sale this afternoon. It was towards the end of the day, somehow this treasure had escaped what had been a frenzy. It measures approximately 5+1/8 square. The back is covered with an old dark velvet, so I haven't yet seen the back of it.
I did check that passage in the Bible, but I'm not sure just what part of the passage the painting illustrates.
I hope you all like it as much as I do. Any help in identifying the origin of the tile or the story it represents would be very welcome.
Thank You friends,
happy Easter season,
Tony
p.s., the color in the second photo is closest.
Hi Tony... it is wonderful ! Happy Easter to you as well. -Mike- :)
That’s weird, there is no Numbers 12:31?? Chapter only has 16 verses.
It’s a beautiful tile, though ;)
Check out Numbers 22:23. Somebody got the reference wrong on this tile.
generically, it's Dutch Delft Biblical Tile, of which there are many. Looks as tho' the angel is holding a serpent rather than a sword.
I’m with KERAMIKOS.
ASS ABUSE.
In most cases, careful examination of the painting on a tile - in combination with the back of the tile and the thickness of the tile, gives a good judgment of the age and authenticity. How do you want to judge a tile if you have not seen the back and do not know how thick it is, is a mystery to me and even then tiles are sometimes forged so well that doubts remain.
Besides, judging a tile by hand is preferable. From a photo this is a lot more difficult because details such as thickness of the tile and the (clay) material of the tile are less visible and in this case not visible at all.
