I have always liked boxes, for some reason. I collect wooden boxes, Italian leather boxes, stone boxes, metal boxes, and mother of pearl cigarette cases. I also like Art Deco style. So when I saw this as a Buy It Now on eBay, I had to buy it! I just finished polishing it up. It was looking pretty rough; with a number of bad black spots on the brass and copper it is made of. Personally, I like it better this way. On the bottom, it says "366-05-2638". I wondered if it was a Social Security Number! I was able to discover that if it IS a SSN, it was assigned in Michigan in 1936. Although it is very nicely made, it has a "home made" look, to me. I wondered if it is trench art? Tell me what you think! PS I've added photo 3, which shows the box on eBay, before it was polished.
I forgot to mention that the number was scratched on the bottom. The first number looks like they used a pin. The others are clearer, like they found a better tool to use, after trying the pin!
You did a wonderful job.
I love anything art-deco ~ it's always in vogue :-)
