I was very lucky to find this unusual vase recently, and am happy to be able to share it here. It stands 12” tall and is quite heavy – the glass is very thick in this piece. Unsigned, I at first believed it was most likely made by Fritz Heckert, c. 1898, and that it was designed by Max Rade.

(Max Rade was a designer, draftsman, and painter who in 1875 became one of the first teachers at the School of Applied Arts in Dresden. He designed motifs for some of Fritz Heckert’s glass from 1898 to 1900. He was heavily influenced by Art Nouveau, and later the Arts & Crafts movement – I see those styles clearly expressed in this vase.)

However, I was wrong! A fellow glass collector in the UK, Mike Moir, showed me a similar example that is in the Harrach Museum. (Thanks, Mike!) After doing a bit more searching, I came across other examples that are very similar to my vase - even a great post here on CW by Brian Severn: https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/141089-harrach-art-nouveau-enameled-vase
So I now feel confident that my vase was made by Harrach, c.1900-1903. It still amazes me at the breadth of styles Harrach produced!

I really love the boldness of the design, and I have always been drawn to this style of decoration; I have quite a few pieces of Arts & Crafts period furniture in my home, and this is a perfect accompaniment to those pieces.

This vase is totally lovely Michelle. The design so well suited to the shape and the subtle background colours a perfect foil for the red flower.

I would have leaned towards Heckert too. Thanks for the education.
