I thought these two saws had an interesting history. In the first case someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make this saw from scratch, cutting and sharpening the teeth and bending a handle which is held on by four bolts. Was the user very poor or just living in a very isolated location too far from a hardware shop.
The second saw was made by Jennings of New York. I like this saw because of the vast amount of work it must have done over a long period of time to reduce it to its present measurements. The tip of the saw is now barely 1 inch and in fact there is a bend in the blade where it buckled, probably the last time it was used. Very often the blades of saws in this state were cut up to be used as scrapers. How many filings and sharpenings would it take to reduce a blade to this size?
I wonder if that first one might have been an "ice saw" with its very large teeth...??
There is nothing unusual about either saw. The two man saw could have been used for either hay or ice. The teeth indicate that. The hand saw tip was made that way intentionally just like a keyhole saw comes to a total point. The teeth on the hand saw indicate it is for cross cutting as opposed to being a rip saw. The saw is so rusty it is difficult to see the teeth. In that shape and being warped about all it is worth is cleaning up and hanging on a wall. Although some people clean them and paint a scene on them.
Great Minds think alike!!!! Fhrjr2 and Anything Obscure!!!
Forgot to say I put up a Painted Ice Saw!!!!
Not sure if it is great minds or just being so old you actually used them in the course of life.
And that was a TOTAL guess on my part 'stuff -- 'ice' was just the only thing ('hay' is another good idea too fjrjr?!) that occurred to me would be cuttable by a saw with such large and oddly shaped teeth. (it certainly wouldn't work well for cutting wood, brush, meat, or other things people typically saw up?!!)
TRUST ME guys -- I've absolutely *never* actually used an ice saw (or a hay saw?) and probably haven't ever even really seen one in person...I'm unsure why I somehow knew of the existence of ice saws' anyway...?? <lol>
