Life lights were night lights which used oil and a floating wick to produce a small light to comfort a child at night. Welz made them in many styles. The most commonly found shape was the 'tri lobed heart' shape at about 7 inches tall. The taller versions, at around 8 inches tall, are less commonly found.
The one I'm posting here is a taller one and so fits in with the small group in image three. It is the same shape as the pair of dark spatter life lights in image three. You probably can't see this clearly because the rigaree on this stripey one hides the distinctive 'bulge' between cup and stem. Though the stripes are different the construction, white stripes between a pink inner and a clear outer, is the same as that of the pink light in image three.
Height 21 cm./8 inches
There's only three pic. The ones you have posted are magical; would that I had a nite light like that to comfort me.
Sorry Gillian, I deleted image three but didn't adjust the text.
I do have one, I think it's Fenton. Have to get some smokeless candles.
Cheers!
All beautiful Peggy!
Thank you so much, Lesley........
What a beauty. Surprising how many shapes life lights came in.
I agree, Fran, and who knows what'll turn up next! It's what keeps collecting Welz interesting.
Hi Peggy, do you know of anywhere that shows a working life light? I'd love to see it. Would the oil and wick go straight in the bowl or did they have had protective insert of some kind?
Hi Fran,
I don't know of of any such exhibition, sorry. I have one that has a diameter that is wide enough for an insert according to certain guidelines, but it's much bigger. The flat ones certainly couldn't have taken an insert, nor could the ones that taper to the rim. I've pondered this myself but I'm not entering the realms of guesswork :)
Here's a link to the one large enough to take an insert,

The info on the diameter necessary to take an insert came from 'IMA Sapp' the expert on fairy lamps who also posts here.
