My guess is, English or German colonial.
Thank you so much for your help , I was way off in my search !
You have a Knights of Pythias helmet! I recommend you look up the organization on Wikipedia but it's a secret society that was formed in 1864 and is still alive today. This color helmet is unusual, as the calla lily insignia was usually red as was the plume. This color of plume was mentioned in Miguel Otero's "My Life on the Frontier 1864-1882," and is mentioned in the 1881-1882 section. It isn't mentioned later or earlier, so I think that's your date. It was made by Pettibone Bros., and the plume is probably Yak hair. Not exactly a wartime relic, but pretty cool nonetheless.
Good call Colonel.
Wow, what a spectacularly unusual thing. "Obscure" to say the least...?? ;-) ;-) ;-)
Gotta wonder what fun (or trouble? I didn't do the search for the KoP link?) might to could ensue if one would actually *wear* such a helmet out to some 'the general public' place...?? [the local mall, gas station, restaurant, etc...maybe wouldn't be noticed at all if worn to a wallyworld...??]
St. Maarten is close enough to being Wally World. I went thru a Fr. gendarme road check wearing a WWII German helmet with SS decals & didn't get one glance from them. Guess the French are calloused to seeing those things. LOL !!
