I have had this trunk for quite some time and really don’t know much about the history. Love the detail in the hardware! If anyone knows anything about the history of this particular style of trunk I would appreciate you sharing it with me.

I posted one very much like yours about five months ago, with a few differences, mine is covered with leather, made buy F. Eggeman & co. out of Toledo Ohio, a little on the rare side, mine has the X slat design on all five sides also , you can find it hear on the C. W. currently working on it, greendog.

Cannot find a makers mark on it. The inside has been redone in cedar.

The above link:(Just scroll down) Has the full patent description by J.B. Duguid, It describes his thinking of crossing the bands to provide greater trunk strength.
Your particular example has many additional rivets on the slats for added strength. Hope this helps.

Just a note, This style of trunk was patented by J.B. Duguid, however that doesn't mean it was made by Duguid, my label says F. Eggeman & Co. now at some time Eggeman and Duguid did become partners.

We recently finished restoring one just like this. It does have a tag inside for F Eggeman & Co.
