I am probably wrong, but it doesn't seem to be old to me. The metal seems to be stamped and the weathering seems to be painted on.
My best guess is the trunk has been restored/worked on previously, maybe 20/30 years ago. Looks originally about 1890's, early 1900's with the dowels integrated into the latches. I've seen the pattern called oil & vinegar but don't know if that is accurate.
The tin stamped parts that have painted gold were patented in 1880 by C. A. Taylor, your trunk is from around the late 1890's to early 1900's, The finish is called a Mottled finish, your trunk is 100 years old give or take a bit, greendog.
