This doesn't appear old to me & the painter's skills looks amateurish to me. The colour of the wood looks new. That 2x4 (?) on the left looks like the "bad end" carpenters cut off. Hey, my opinion only.
Thank you blunderbuss2. I am looking for opinions! You may be seeing the pieces of cardboard box stuck to that left side.
There is nothing on the lid now, but something was there.

Is this something that could have some refinishing on the paint done? From what I can find in researching this, it seems to possibly be in the Pennsylvania Dutch style. I wonder if the mural on the top was painted at a later date as it does not seem to match the style.
The box closure was made in the early 1800s.
