Hi, found this in a box of bits at my dads, he remembers it always sitting in a tin of buttons at his mum and dads and was told a long time ago that it was a doll of a lady called Mother Shipton. I have tried to find out more but everything relating to her portrays her as a witch. There is no colour on the doll but there is a lot of detail for the clothing and holes where I presume arms and legs would have been fixed.
Please can someone help with any info
I’ve never had a thing for dolls but this is fantastic, in my view! I love it!
I hope doll experts on this site will know all the details for you.
Over the years I have seen a good many debates about mother Shipton and at one point read about the history of her life. It was claimed she wasn't exactly a witch but she was butt ugly. She told fortunes and made accurate predictions of future events. The face on this isn't even close to an images it have ever seen of her. So I will pose a question. Do you think the story behind this may have confused Mother Shipton with it being made of Mother of Pearl? Just a thought for you to consider.
Thank you for the comments, I don’t think it matches images of Mother Shipton either, even the clothes carved on the doll look too smart. I have searched images and can only find 1 other of the same female that is identical until you turn it around and the back is a man. I will keep investing as would be great to get a definitive answer.
