In this article the Kia-Ora is a "squash" drink, meaning you pour a small amount in bottom of your glass (a larger amount if your Mum wasn't watching), and add water. It would be sickly sweet if you drank it straight from the bottle. In the U.K. at that time there would have been no ice for drinks. No ice for drinks for a long, long time. Ice dilutes the gin!
