Civil War Captain killed leading his company at Gettysburg

The front of this Civil War carte de visite shows what looks like a typical Civil War captain.

The back of the carte reveals an amazing story. Captain Everett joined the 30th NY Infantry in October of 1862 and fought with the Regiment at Fredericksburg. When the Regiment was mustered out of Federal service, Captain Everett was transferred to the 76th NY Infantry and took command of Company E.

It was a little over a month later that Captain Everett found himself in the heavy fighting at Gettysburg.

The 76th NY Infantry went into battle with 348 soldiers and suffered the loss of 32 KIA, 132 WIA (16 of those died of wounds) and 70 MIA.

As noted on the back of the cdv, Captain Everett was one of those casualties. While leading his company, he was killed instantly by a shot through the head. His body was recovered and shipped home where he received a heroes funeral in his hometown of Watervliet, NY.
