I bought this years ago off a porch where it had sat for years. It is a form I've never seen before, but seems quite old . Anyone have any thoughts ?!

What's the measurements?? Does it swivel on the nut shaped base??

Might well have been used for an anvil. I can't see the under side of the bottom but I sooner think it is either a pile driver or well point driver. My 2 cents.

fhrjr2 might be right!! Back in the sixty's Crawford's pump house down the Cape the point clogged up. firing the 22 down the pipe didn't free it up anymore!!! Hot July day we pulled the roof off and manually up drove the old pipe(Took a lot of beers and sweat!!!) and put down the new point.

It's about 3 feet tall including the base . The base is sort of odd, in that it seems to rest upon it, yet it would make it more unstable to remain upright. I always thought it was an anvil, but am open to other thoughts ! Seems really old to me, and weighs a ton ( I can't if it ! )

Take a picture of the under side of the bottom that we can't see. That will be a big help.

Oh WOW paulpeople -- if that thing is 3' tall (!!) no doubt you can't lift it?!!

My guess is more along the lines of 'pile driver' then, also wondering if the 'base' as shown really wasn't intended to be its top instead...??

It is a very cool chunk of iron 'puzzle' anyways!! :-) :-) :-)

Anythingobscure that is what we are trying to figure out. If the bottom is recessed and can move/rotate is what I am looking to find out. The handle of this is missing but if it is what I think it was a two man job. I have two 20 foot deep wells in my back yard that were driven with a well point. They work well where there is no stone or ledge to go through. Florida has lime stone at best which is soft. May be totally something different but I put in my 2 cents.

Wow!! Crawford would have to give us more than beer to use that sucker!!!
As fjrjr2 said it was a 2 man job!!!! As well as I can remember it was a weighted collar we put around the well pipe with 2 handles and put a cap on the pipe and drove it up til we got to the next connection and repeat. Crawfords point went down around 25 feet!!!
      Stuff
      That

fhrjr & Stuff -- sounds perfectly sensible to me?!! Frankly I just had to go Google 'well point' to find out what that even *is* exactly...FWIW, I've never lived in a house where the H2O didn't just 'come out of a pipe under the house, from somewhere under the street out front'... and now I've learned something new, once more, via CW. ;-) :-) <applause>

As to the "driver" for one...well, if that (this?) is part of some man-powered machine to do so, I think I'll take a pass on the job, though it'd probably be fun to see/watch...? <lol>

So post a clear picture of the under side and maybe we can put this to bed. You seem reluctant to post that image.

Fhr, it's probably too heavy to just flip it ! And Anything, water that comes out of a pipe under a house ? Wow, what they won't think of next ! LOL !

It is a pig to lift for sure, I'll try to get an image at some point ( no pun intended )
