I've been fortunate over the last two years to find a few examples of this rare variation of Peloton glass, with brown threads. This basket is very heavy, made from two or three layers of thickly cased glass. The wide, autumnal hued Peloton threads are blended right into the white ground. The top rim is incurved in the manner of a rose bowl.
This Victorian basket measures 23 cm tall, around 12 cm across the wavy, broadly crimped top rim, & 9 cm across the base, which has a neatly polished out pontil.
Perhaps by Harrach? It's a high quality piece & rather unusual, whoever made it.
Nice piece. Perhaps it could also be Kralik ?
Many thanks, larksel! Yes, Kralik is another possibility for sure. There is still some mystery about Peloton glass, & it seems that it was made by numerous manufacturers. I have a large collection of Peloton glass & there are many variations to the decor, in terms of colour, & texture.
Lovely. Please send me some of that luck of yours, Peloton continues to evade me :(
Thanks so much, Vintagefran - I will definitely send you some Peloton vibes! And this one was not even listed as such, rather, it was simply described as a Bohemian glass basket. And I have also found it listed as spatter glass, & even as a pink glass vase...amazing what can turn up via alternative searches...
I'll be feeling out for those vibes :) if it were listed as Peloton I bet it would've cost a bomb! I had my chance and missed it:( one came online simply listed as Victorian and sold ridiculously cheaply. I could've cried for missing it, I set two alarms and managed to be out and miss both of them, it still hurts, months later..
Perhaps this one's fabrication is not quote what they meant by 'peloton'.
We have a Kralik director of Harrach's who applied for a pattern called peloton, and since it is a French word, it also implies a certain form.
I love the mix of glass colors here, the strands of peloton have been highly manipulated, not Harrack, not Ruckl and not Kralik in my opinion. The rim of the basket also the look of those smooth crimped rose bowls.
Warren might have an opinion. Thanks for posting.
Vintagefran...your time will come one day, I'm sure. I have missed out many times, but things always seem to turn up some other time, often better than what I missed. The hunt is always on!
Thank you IronLace. Im sure I'll get a piece one day. It's just annoying to have come so close and missed it. I've been very fortunate in finding unusual and rare decors, just not Peloton. Still, it gives me something to hunt for :)
