Found this vase in my local Salvos store last week for $1. For a split second, I thought I'd made the find of the year - a real Clarice Cliff vase.
However, when I turned it over to inspect the backstamp, I saw an impressed mark reading Copyright 1993 MMA, so I knew it was a repro of some sort. Turns out that the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York commissioned a series of Clarice Cliff inspired reproductions in 1993, which were made in the Phillipines. How it ended up in the Katoomba Salvos, I have no idea, except that this rather ramshackle establishment seems to be a cosmic magnet for interesting stuff.
This vase reproduces Clarice Cliff vase shape #278, & is hand painted with the Melon pattern.
It's now in the same cabinet as my Tango glass where it fits in quite nicely. There are a few tiny chips on it, but I shall overlook them.
Now, perhaps I'll even find a real Clarice Cliff vase one day...
I love Clarice Cliff!! Fabulous stuff!!
Many thanks welzebub! I also have one authentic Clarice Cliff piece - a rectangular plate marked "The Biarritz". It belonged to my grandmother. Will have to post a photo of it! I would love to get more someday...
