I picked up this Karpen Dresser at a thrift store to refinish and restore. I'd like to restore it to look like something of its time or something like mid-century modern style. I was hoping to get some information about the type of wood even. Thank you so much.
Dates from the 2nd quarter, 20th century.
While it may overlap with time of "mid century modern", it is closer in style to earlier pieces.

What style would you say this piece is?
I'd call it "depression era" furniture. It is fairly distinctive in look. Often found with contrasting veneers, decorative pieces that simulate carving, and feet like yours.
Early pieces can be substantial (heavy), but later pieces are thin/ easy to move.

It has lovely wood graining which looks like its still in pretty good shape, please just beware that it is nearly undoubtedly veneer on the outside, so be careful while cleaning/refinishing it...maybe also consider products which might 'reconstitute' its original finish instead of more invasive sanding/removal/replacement thereof.

Certainly is veneer and very well matched veneer. If it were mine I would get a ten pack of extra fine steel wool and lacquer thinner and clean it. You will be amazed at the blemishes that will get rid of without scratching or otherwise damaging the finish, except wax or built up polish. Long as you are sure you have extra fine, it will be marked 0000 four zeros or officially four ought steel wool.
I am going to use some chemical Stripper today and use some fine steel wool to get the finish off. Then we'll see what I do with it. I don't think I am going to try to take out the gouges from the drawer pulls. The semi circle is definitely stained after the original make. I found some stain on the hardware as I was cleaning it with vinegar today.
Keep in mind your stripper will also unglue the veneer if you aren't dam careful. If that happens you will have a real project on your hands.

May want to consider some of the advice-- you can always strip it down if you don't like the results from a less destructive refinish.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just stripped the outside of the dresser, not the drawers. I'll pick up some lacquer thinner tomorrow and try that out with the steel wool and remove the stripping stuff. I guess I will see what I find.
I also learned that the side of the dresser is about 1/4 inch of veneer and the drawer fronts are only 1/16. I think someone maybe have already sanded it. Too bad
