I found this piece of art at a flea market, for a steal. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it yet, but I knew I had to have it when I saw it.

Where I live (Sweden) they used to be the type benches the pupils had in school in the old days. You would keep your books and pencils and such underneath the lid of the desk. This is the first time I see one with a drawer under the chair. It looks old and wonderful. I understand why you had to have it! Great find!

Oh I was too quick with my fingers, have to add that yours have some extra details that makes me think it has been used for somekind of speciall jobb instead. Something that demanded precision, a steady hand or.... what? Hope someone knows.

Have googled and I think this is a student desk but a bit more elaborate. Don't know what the holder is for, maybe you could attach a lamp or something there?

Sorry to write so much :)
Mosts antique student desks seems to have a plase for the ink on top of the desk but yours don't, maybe for practical reasons. I suspect the table is adjustable? Then you would not want the ink ontop of it. So instead under the arrest you have this foldout inkwell holder. I will show a link to an inkwell that might have been the type they would use and maybe it was possible to lock it in its position?

My phone does not help me, ment to write "under the armrest"....

Here is a somewhat similar desk but without the inkwell holder:

My mother purchased two of these desks from the 1-room schoolhouse she, her father and my two oldest siblings attended when they auctioned off the building and it's contents. One had an ink-well and one didn't. I have no idea of it's value but yours is the first I've seen with the exact same metal components as the one my mother gave me. I plan to use it as a plant stand, with the wood protected, of course. The drawer is a handy place to hold phone cords or our camera, or other type of frequently used item. I've considered using it by the door to hold my purse, keys, and jacket when I'm home. Another use would be as a message/planning/scheduling location for family messages and such.

Not positive but I think this tilt top was produced from 1890 to around 1920 when the flip top was introduced.
