The true 1:64 scale series was started by Auto World after noting that other 1:64 scale models were all the same size. A VW bug was the same size 3/4 ton truck or Cadillac. Plus they are really well done. They have been making cars of a similar size, they need some Corvettes or early T Birds. What they have been making are early muscle cars like this.
This one is a 1963 Dodge Polaris 500 Max Wedge. I am going to let some Mopar fans tell us what that is. I would just be copying from Wikipedia. I will guess it involves a Hemi engine.
I really like the front grill on this and it has a detailed license plate and other fine details. The rear end also.
Coming up next is a mystery even to me . We shall soon see.
These Auto World vehicles are exceptional compared to the majority of diecasts. Great quality and detail. Actually the "wedge" refers to the cylinder head profile as looked at from the front(or back). The combustion chamber is wedge shaped, this is the ancestor of the 383, 440, etc. engines. I can't remember all the displacements except the 413 and 426(426 WEDGE, not 426 hemi). The "hemi" is short for hemisphere, their combustion looked like the section of a shere. Chysler offered different performance packages and items for these early muscle cars. The one item that usually comes to mind to define these cars was the cross ram intake manifold. The carbs are offset to sides on it, it's pretty cool looking. These cars predate the GTO, arguably they are the first factory muscle cars, they're just not as well known as the goats. Chrysler also offered these cars as Super Stock class strictly for drag racing, they had either fiberglass or aluminum(I can't remember) front fenders and hood. The windshield was made out of plexiglass also to reduce weight and no back seat. Those were the good old days when you could buy a car that would do 11's or 12's at the strip stock off the lot.
Sorry Bobby, I accidentally deleted your comment
I'll try and fix it when I get home.
bobby725's comment "Love the old Dodges! They hid some mean engines in some otherwise plain looking cars like the Polaris, Coronet and Monaco! "
I was deleting a double posted comment and deleted the wrong one. Luckily CW emails us the comments..
You made an excellent point about the plain looking cars.
Thank you very much Toyrebel. You did a much better write up than I did once more.
I believe that the title should read Polara....I had a Polaris snowmobile back in the 70s.... :)
Thank you very much buckethead. I fixed it, don't run into the Polora often.
