Here is something that have been displaying at my Early American tool displays for several year now. I have it setting on the table with a sign behind it asking "what is this thing". Some people recognize it immediately as to what it is and others are at a loss as to it's identity. The first, second and third photo shown here is how I display it, and the fourth photo shown here is with the tool opened. Most people now recognize it now as what it is, which is a "boot jack".
I am never ceased to be amazed at the ingenuity our forefathers shown in their inventiveness and their skills in making tools.
