This is a beautiful black glass electrified oil lamp which is hand painted with kingfishers, cattails, lily pads, fish, other aquatic plants, set in a marsh or pond. Most of the metal fittings (bronze/brass) appear original and the kerosene chamber remains hidden within the glass vessel (subsequently drilled through, wired, and fit with electric lamp parts above).

When a bright light is held behind it, the black glass glows cherry red. We suspect it was made by Harrach or another Bohemian glass company, but would love any thoughts you might have. The glass portion of the lamp stands 11 1/2 inches tall.

Hey aesthete1880, welcome to CW! :^D I see that you live on west side of the Bay from me! What a beautiful Lamp, I love that Kingfisher, it looks just like the ones that live here in California. Maybe they all look the same! The Lamp sounds like it would make a nice low/night Light, if you wired it with a small watt bulb inside, or are you already using it that way?
Thanks so much for showing, and I hope someone can help you finding out about the Art Glass part of your Great Lamp! :^)

Hi billretirecoll, that is a really cool idea! I think you would need a really high watt bulb, however, and heat might be an issue. In the fourth picture, we took a super bright bike light and put it inside the glass vessel and directed it right at the camera to pick up the red glow. This black glass is quite opaque and we only knew about checking this based on comments by a Bohemian glass expert on this site (bohemianglassandmore). During this process of dismantling the lamp, we also found the original metal kerosene reservoir and checked the flat glass bottom for a signature, but did not find one.

Thanks so much aesthete1880, that's too bad, that it would have to be so bright, but I love the Light just the same! :^D

Still hoping for any insight re. the possible maker of the black glass portion of this oil lamp... Any thoughts?

Such!!..beautiful enamelling, love the kingfisher, we have them in the garden every day...it’s of high quality so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was by Harrach.

inky, thanks for your comments regarding the quality of the enameling. Wish we had kingfishers in our garden every day, how wonderful!

Posted a similar scene of a kingfisher overlooking a pond, in this case a piece of enamel jewelry: https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/273691-kingfisher-enamel-jewelry-arts-and-craf?
