A $5 find at my local monthly flea market, this Victorian vase is made from a single layer of a light amber coloured glass. Of a slightly swollen, cylindrical form, it has an all - over pattern of tiny nodules & four vertical ribs. It measures around 21.5 cm tall, 4 cm across the cut top rim, & 8 cm across the clear applied thorny footed base. There is a clear applied rigaree around the top rim, consisting of five, downward drooping thorny leaves (or petals).
A fine illustration of ugly beauty, it is an odd looking piece but nonetheless compelling. Reminiscent of a sea cucumber or anemone from another planet.
A Bohemian origin is fairly certain.

Many thanks, racer, yes it is a good size & especially for the price!
I love the term jolie laide/belle laide...& have used it an artwork. Characterful things win my heart in many contexts...

Welz also used this texture with spatter décors.

Many thanks, sklo42 - thought this may have been Welz but wasn't 100% sure - nice to know that it is!
