After the death of her mother and father, our friend and her husband purchased the farm that she lived on for all of her life. She is an animal lover and had several farm pets during her childhood, including a pony, rabbits, a horse and a pet goat.
She was having a yard sale and was undecided weather she should sell her old goat cart that she had as a child. I told her that I would restore it for her if she decided to keep it.
She was 8 years old when her father purchased it for her and although it was in rather bad shape due to it's years of storage in the barn, she decided to keep it and asked if I would clean it up for her. I agreed to her request.
My intensions were to keep the old paint and add a clear coat of varnish to bring out the patina that old wood has.
I couldn't hold true to that because the old paint had deteriorated to a chalky coating and would have flaked off at the slightest touch.
I repaired the damaged wood and used the same colors, I then pin striped the new paint, as I'm sure was the way it was when new. I wrote the name of her father's farm on the dash board and made a nametag with her maiden name as she was called when she was 8 years old and fastened it to the seat back.
My wife gave me some leather to put on the seat (originally there was no material on the seat) and, after reading how to tuft upholstery on You - tube I tufted the seat and back.
To give it add flair, I installed an antique whip holder next to the seat, and an antique rein holder on the inside of the dash board (as seen in the last picture)
To finish it, I made a PVC stand for the inside of the poles to stand up proudly for display.
She and her husband were in Turkey when I restored the cart. They're back now and have not seen it yet.
I hope that she likes it!
P.S. .... The little white hair that you see on the middle of the rein holder in photo #4, is not mine, it comes with letting your pet cat roam freely in your workshop.
You did an OUTSTANDING restoration on this little goat cart!! What a wonderful gesture of kindness. She's going to LOVE this.
