Looks like a reproduction.
Can you tell me how to find the difference
It is embossed and train spittoons weren't embossed because they wore out so frequently, the shape is totally wrong. This one was produced right before the vase shaped spittoon and both were embossed and sold as collector items. Lastly it has no acid stains which no cleaning can prevent if it were used. The shape alone defies ever having been used by a railroad. That being said, it doesn't mean this isn't old. Many reproductions/copies are old because back in the day they were in demand for household use, bars, movie theaters etc. As time went on the entire design was exaggerated along with the embossing simply because it sold. I have bought and sold both real and reproductions over the years and enjoyed every minute of it.
Thanks for the info only paid 30 so that's good thanks
Long as you don't want to sell it anytime soon it is a good thing. They make fun decor. I once had one sitting on the front porch next to a rocking chair just for old time sake.
Very nice
