I have this necklace I believe to be stone but I really haven’t a clue. I think it’s mourning jewelry. This piece is heavy weighing 125 grams and measures 24 1/2”, no clasp. There not plastic, and I don’t think there glass. There not black diamonds, black spinel? Onyx? Any info would be nice.
Not meaning to put paid to your saying about it being a mourning piece, not every black necklace is necessarily so. Mourning jewelry usually comes in the form of a brooch or locket. Something that could be worn close to the heart? Long strings of beads were more for formal occasions, and for flappers! The last link is a photo - think it's the best one - for me anyway.

Wow - 14 1/2" that is very short. Photo must have been enlarged a lot? Being shorter doesn't make it a mourning piece though.
@Gillian, whoops it’s actually 24 1/2”
