whatever it is, it's fabulous! love the graphic quality.
Definitely not Hopi. Hopi coiled baskets are made only on Second Mesa, and the basket makers are very conservative, never departing from traditional materials and patterns. The are always woven from galleta grass, and sewn with thin yucca strips, and have a plain self-finish rim, never a braided or herringbone rim. The design patterns are made from dyed yucca, and are stitched in as the basket is made.
In the case of this basket, someone apparently took an old basket, and painted the "Indian style" designs on it. No Native American tribe makes anything remotely like this. Designs are not painted on. The pictographs are attempting to look like a Plains Indian buffalo hunt, but Plains Indians do not make baskets, nor is this a Plains Indian design. To say nothing of the fact that the animal looks like a cross between a Texas Longhorn and a camel....
The basket may have started out as an Indian basket, but the painting is not Native American-made.
Thank you, CanyonRoad. This is what I was afraid of. If anyone else has more ideas about the origin of the basket, I would be most appreciative!
