My research tells me that it could be Hopi, as the "rain cloud" symbol on the bottom might be a Hopi artist's signature? Am I wrong? Can someone with true knowledge on the subject help me figure out the origin of this piece and why it has an unusual form? Thank you.
It is Hopi pottery, but I am not familiar with who signs with this hallmark. It is similar to Hattie Carl's, but her mark has a flower coming up out of the cloud.
There is a Cloud clan at Hopi, so perhaps this mark is a relative or clan member related to her.
Almost all Hopi pottery made since the late 1800s was made for sale to tourists or collectors, so especially in the first half of the 20th century, Hopi potters were experimenting with a wide range of items and forms to appeal to potential buyers.
