So I received this lady cameo from my 91 year old client. She gave it to me and said "I want you to have this because it was my mothers and she passed it on to me and I know she would have loved you as much as I do." With that, my client was born in 1926 and that's about all the background I can think of that would beneficial to helping me find out what this is. I know it is real. It is 10k gold filled and conch shell, but I want to know how old it is or more history behind it. I think it is rare that it is octagon shaped, what does that mean? What era was it created in? What is the architecture of the frame? Who is the lady?
The material is helmet shell. The figure is not anyone you can put a name to. She is a pretty lady in a style that was popular in the 20s & 30s. The lady is under the influence of art nouveau; the rectangle with canted corners shows a deco influence. Cameos tend to lag behind trends in art & design, so probably from the 30s.
A pretty, romantic piece, & so meaningful as a gift because it was so meaningful to the giver.
