    I had recently acquired this what i believe o be a Japanese dagger. Does anyone know how or where I can go to look for the history on this peice would be much appreciated

      I would venture to say you have a modern reproduction sold in novelty stores.

      Agree-- it is modern made.

      It is also very poor quality-- fittings, blade, handle....

      Looks like an amateur assemblage.

      That is where I was aimed scottvez. Nothing about this matches anything I have right down to the misfit loop made of white metal to attach it to a belt or sash. Totally out of place as is the hand guard and quality of the steel. They still sell these at the flea markets over here in Saint Petersburg. Mostly young folks buy them or a guy for his man cave to hang on the wall.

      I listed one a couple of days ago. although mine is not an original weapon, I did find out from the dealer that I purchased it from that it is called a Tanto, or short sword that was carried along with the long sword or Katana by Samurai Worriers.
      They also used them in the ritual ceremony of hari-kari or "Seppaku".
