I forgot to post this treasure i found last month! This is a large blue-rimmed planter with a jojo bird and flowers and taotie mask handles applied to the outside. it's about 20 inches across and made in Guangdong Province, China [home of Shiwan]. This is a very rare and valuable piece treasured by the Peranakan people of Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. It's also in incredibly good shape for it's age. I had it professionally appraised for insurance purposes by one of the top appraisers of Chinese pottery in the country - because it's such a rarity. I was very pleased with the results! i found this in a second-hand shop here in the East Bay. How it got here is a real mystery!

Good thing you had this checked out. I read recently on another site that these are also made in San Francisco's Chinatown district. Best to be sure.

ho2 I was researching or trying to research another item and in the process was redirected to a link Guangdong written by a guy who specializes in ancient Chinese pottery and works at some University although I forget where. During reading his lengthy article there was quite a bit I didn't understand but at the end he cautioned about the old timers in Chinatown producing them to appear original. Also something visible under the blue area. I don't remember what it was under the blue but seem to think some sort of a mark. In that you had it all checked out you should be fine. Just keep the appraisal paperwork safe. You were wise to take it to someone to examine in person because photo appraisals like the ones provided here are useless for insurance purposes.
