Here's an 1870's Leather & Zinc Barrel Top Trunk I acquired a while back. It has a complete interior layout & measures in at 28" L x 17" D x 24" High. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but an interesting example none the less.

Well Tom, I think this trunk dates prior to 1880, because of the hardware on it, none of which dates after 1880, and the lack of cross slat clamps on the top which were patented in 1880, The use of the zinc metal end caps rather than tin, zinc was rarely used after 1880 because it was expensive, the arrow head leather handles which this one had, was also used more prior to 1880, now I could be wrong but everything about this trunk to me screams late 1870's 77, 78, 79.

It has a complete interior which is pretty good.

I was thinking the same thing Brian..but then I realized it has the new design slats running from front to back pushing it to 1880's.

OK, this may be confusing, it was to me at first, as explained to me by Jim Cardoza, this is not a true cross slat design by definition of the patent by Charles Taylor in march of 1880, the wood cross slats must be reinforced by the metal cross slat clamp patented in 1880 which would make it no earlier than 1880, because there are no metal slat clamps this trunk could easily be late 1870's.

The fact that the wood slats run front to back have nothing to do with the cross slat clamp patent by Charles Taylor.

Well, That I was not aware of. I have the patent sheet for the new design and assumed it included the front to back wood slats. That's good to know. Thanks so much for that Brian & Jim and for taking the time it is very much appreciated.
