I bought this 15 or 20 years ago, I think. It measures 5" high x 5" long x 2.25" wide. As I recall, it was specially made using the original mold to commemorate some milestone of a glass collectors society, perhaps the New Martinsville Glass Collectors Society? It came with a fancy box, velvet bag and documentation, including a casting number for this particular piece. I do not recall who made it, but I am certain it was a U. S. glass company. Unfortunately, I had received several items that day and, in cleaning up the mess, I accidentally discarded everything but the dog, which I had put in my china cabinet where it has resided ever since. I did not miss the box for several days and it had already been picked up by the garbage man when I did. Dang. Yeah, I suck. It has a distinctive mark on the back which might help identify the club or maker, or both.
I did find an example of an original on Worthpoint, so did not mistake the original mold maker. It is identified as the #733 Police/German Shepherd Dog

Calling it a mystery in case someone can provide more history for this piece.
I found this in Glass Animals by Dick & Pat Spencer, 2004, page 66. There was a reissue by Viking in 1978 using the New Martinsville mark, which is on this piece, and in the mid-1980s, in a limited edition of 500 for Mirror Image, but marked with a "V". This dog may be from the 1978 release. None of this quite jibes with what I remember, though. I seem to recall that mine was limited/numbered edition. I did not notice a number etched on the piece, so may excavate it from my china cabinet again for another look. Not too happy with my images, either, so may take another whack at that, too. I guess it is possible that there was another reissue by someone after 2004....
Gorgeous German shepherd, I have this 78 Viking reissue too, nice one Kevin
At first I thought it was a cat in the thumbnail! :P Its very sleek and cool looking!
@Newfld - Thanks for confirming the production origin of this piece, Jenni! Guess I found it as NOS.
@LaurenRedmond - I'm going to redo the images of this one! It has a lot of detail that I couldn't capture with my phone camera. I bought a fancy new camera but haven't been able to get decent images out of it, yet. This will be a good test subject..
Thanks for loving my Viking reissue of a Martinsville piece!
