I live in Melbourne, Australia. I purchased this sword and know nothing of its age, country of origin etc. It does have the following engraved letters on the blade; asdfghjkbvny. If I could have any assistance with my search it would be much appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Enrico Altavilla.

Need to add some clear photos. Include the blade and markings.

Based on the flowered hilt and fittings, it may be Japanese.

The overall design is quite similar to the 1861 Naval Officer Cutlass sword. A photo of the blade and markings would have been helpful. Also the length would be helpful with regards to the country of origin. Seldom will you find swords the same design and the same length coming from two different countries. British boarding cutlass were also quite similar to this during the 1850's & 60's. Again length would come into question. Also be aware that fake reproductions are out there by the thousands. The letters on this one are cause for some concern if that is the extent of the markings.

Japanese went through my mind except for lettering on it in English. Admittedly the lettering could have been added by a previous owner but caused a question in my mind. As scottvez suggested better pictures including blade and marking would be a big help.

The chrysanthemum(that wasn't easy to spell !) makes it Japanese. I'm not into Nippon things, but my semi-educated guess, would be naval.

This looks original and should be worth quite a bit.

Thank you very much for all of the replies to my inquiry about the sword I recently purchased. I will reply to some of the questions asked. The length of the sword is 87cm. The length of the blade is 72cm. The blade has the following inscribed near the hilt. HEEV D8B. The 'D' could be a zero. I will upload an image of this. Added to this below are the following numbers; 7711.
