brought this home from garage sale today just so I could bring it to show and tell. The business end is shaped like a #10 flathead screw (so maybe some kind of alignment tool) - the plunger exposes the two nested sleeves in photo 3. Seems to be a lot of tool if the only purpose is to light up a screw.

I have a similar thingie in my toolbox @ work; it is used to help install the individual little metal contact parts into plastic multi-pin ("Molex") electrical connectors. Mine doesn't have the 'double acting' plunger though...??

mystery solved. Now I can sleep tonight! -- Molex pin remover - see it in action at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZUoqO29RsQ - Now I'm in search of a molex connector to try out my new tool. Thanks Anything Obscure. I'm always impressed at the collective genius of the web.
