Located this Shell oil can in the attic at my rental house, and knew I had hit a mini jackpot. It has the original lid, very minimal rust, great paint quality and condition, and it appears to be from the 60's... I am hoping to gather more information from anyone that may be more knowledgeable on these collectible oil canisters. I RESEARCHED TO THE BEST OF MY AVAILABILITY, BUT I could not manage to find any quite like this one.
l ESPECIALLY COULDNT FIND ONE WITH:
• Oiginal lid - Crimp style steel top numbers match container/canister; 70330 060069.
• Darina ax stamped/pressed on the can with 70330 underneath it (opposed to being painted typography like most others I've located)
• Rheem N.O. STC | ICC 37A 60 | 26 5 69 (Possible Date... May 26 1969?)
• Wooden handle grip on the well designed and durable metal handle.
I'm interested to know what year and type of oil this may have been... What is Darina Ax?, WHAT IS THE VALUE of this Shell ould container being all original with minimal rust and in GREAT condition having RARE lid intact unlike most others I've found online
Not an oil pail but Darina AX lithium based grease. It's color was toffee (coffee with cream). Most common grade NLGI 2. I worked the Shell Oil MTZ Refinery 52 years ago. Where they "compounded" grease. The compound house. But the pail could have originated in any of the 5 largest refineries. Most Darina AX grease was dispensed from 120 lb "Quarter Drums" 120 lbs. Your pail is 35 lb container. The grease was by far Shell Oil's most common grease. Every Shell Station used it for chassis lubrication.
Worthy of note: Motor Oil. In 1969 Shell introduced a radical new motor oil branded FIRE & ICE 20W 50. A new additive Zinc Dithiophosphhate had a unique odor.
The old compound house is probably gone now. If not in the drum elevator from the stencil floor I denoted a unique date 4-5-67 on the wall with a special chalk marker.
