1863 lock plate Amoskeag contract rifle. Engraving (Stamped) on top of barrel James Henry 28th PVV. Muster roles show he completed a 3 year enlistment ending with the war in 1865. Interesting possible Gettysburg connection. The history of the 28th PVV states that they received new springfield rifles replacing their old Enfields in the week or so preceding their march to and participation in Gettysburg. Quite possible this contract rifle, a Springfield clone contracted to keep up with Demand that Springfield could not meet, was actually carried by private Henry at Gettysburg and throughout the remainder of his service. (Muster roles show he was present for duty during Gettysburg. Wondering if anyone knows of manufacturing or delivery records for Amoskeag?

I've owned numerous CW contract rifles. This is one of the makers I never had because they aren't very common. Looks plenty, good enough to clean-up and shoot. What does the bore look like ? Sorry,I get a bit carried away sometimes.

      Hey Blunderbuss2,

I appreciate and share your enthusiasm for these weapons.. the metal is somewhat pitted, and the iron buttplate is definately pitted and rusted. I have never fired it just due to the condition and provenance attributed to the barrel stamping. Somehow, I think this veteran returned home to PA and this trusted musket hung over the mantel or in the barn for the remainder of his life. Funny, I bought the gun in an antique shop in Florida in the late 80’s for $350. I took it to a gun store to have it looked at and immediately got offers for the gun.... glad I kept it!
