Came across this tool years ago. I believe it's a Timber Scribe. Well made Rock Maple and Brass. I thought the thumb screw adjusted the point til I opened it!! It adjusted the cutting blade!!! Don't know a lot about how it worked but I'm sure someone here does.

Might be a scribe but not for standing timber I believe.

I don't really recognize it either, but would wonder if it could be some sort of leatherworking tool...?? Just my SWAG... ;-) :-)

I got it with a Old Lufkin Oak 2 ft stick with Marking crayon?? Have to find it??

Hmmm. Possibly to mark logs on the butt end at the saw mill. How far between the two metal pieces?
The point acts as a pivot to scribe circles. This type usually has an extra scribe for straight lines.
About a 1/2" There are a few timber scribes on ebay. I think you are on the right track!!

I found it in forest and field listed as a timber scribe for marking joints in timber frame construction. Rounded end of the one metal piece should show where it has been sharpened because it cuts as you turn it. For some reason I can't copy and paste the link.
It has a sharp edge on both sides!! Was up to Orrington and Oxford Maine over Thanksgiving Wife's family still there. Turkey over a pellet grill!!! YUM!!! Mark's been a Maine Guide for over 30 years.
