I would say your husband is right but not exactly a headlight. This is missing a handle on the top. When cars first came out, at night someone was required to walk in front of you with one of these to warn other cars and those who were on horseback.
Is that a connection on the back?? You can put up 2 more pics.

Yes it connects to something. He thought on the front of a car. How do I post more pics to this?
It is like a screw coming put with a bolt.. so I assume it screwed in and on onside of car maybe u put the bolt on. Best way I could describe.. lol. Sont make fun.. hehe

Looks like one was drilled on the bottom to electrify it. Nice pair. Someone here should give you more answers.

If not from an early automobile, maybe actual (horse-drawn) "carriage lamps"??
Hi WideAwake0247 these were used on early cars but not headlights, not sure what to call them but there like marker lights usually mounted up near the windshield one on each side, you can see them if you search for early model T Ford photos.
Thanks you Ejw54. I will def look them up.. can you engine using these to this day???
Thanks Anything.. I nkw thing they were used for all sorts of things on cars or porch light.. or to be carried. Pretty neat
