I found this sculpture yesterday in Berkeley, CA. It looked pretty rough, but a light steel wooling and waxing made it come back beautifully. I wish i could make out that signature better. can anyone else decipher it?

Great piece! Looks like '68 below. The signature may be stylized. Copying it into an image editor, changing to greyscale and inverting it would show it most clearly.

It did the operations described above and still only get something like:

      i (multiple characters combined) e d

i'm seeing h e a but the h is really like a symbol of some sort like a corn plant. ??

and under it '68' [including quote marks].

Wow, do you know what kind of wood it is, probably pretty heavy?

This looks like that Japanese root wood, of course I have the CRS again and can't think of the name of it. I just saw it yesterday too. I don't know if it's carved in such a large piece tho. I know the Japanese would carve small figurines of this wood and put it in their entryway of their homes. Karen knows the name of the wood I'm trying to say here. Wait, I have a post with some too. Let me take a peek and i'll get back to you.

Yes, I did have a post. Japanese Okimono wood. Sure looks like it to me!

My second thought would be monkey pod wood.

thanks share! Okimono is not a type of wood, but a figurine. they can be made of anything. i'm not familiar with monkey pod wood, but will check it out now.

now i know what it is. no, this wood is much heavier and harder. it polishes like stone.
