I would like to share my newest vase, a Loetz kristall schiefgewaltzt (‘rolled aslant’) with grünen (‘green’) reeded handles; it has a sterling collar that was made by William Hutton, dated 1899. Hutton was a well regarded silversmith in Sheffield, England, and he had his silverwork assayed in either Sheffield or Birmingham; this piece has the Birmingham assay mark of an anchor.

After attempting to unsuccessfully look up a PN number for this piece, I asked Warren if he could provide some direction. He suggested looking at the later PN II-6152 through 6155 vases (c.1908) since the shapes appear to be similar, but they have applied rigaree rather than handles. Since this piece is at least 9 years earlier based on the collar date, the shape would be late in the PN I series.

The vase itself, without the collar, is 6-1/2” (16.5cm) tall, and the base is ground flat.

I think it is a beautifully executed piece; the way the handles are applied in alignment with the slanting of the kristall body is very pleasing. The silver took me ages to polish (many q-tips!) but was definitely worth the effort!

I love the twisted angularity.......the optical effects must be magic in a sunny corner!

Thanks so much, Peggy! It is a sparkling piece - we have had rain for a while, so I do need to see it in the sun!

I loved this on FB Michelle, the photos here help display it so much more.
Optics are great, and the green handles are perfectly placed.
The collar really gets me though; how different and beautiful is it!!

Thanks so much for your kind comments, Karen! Yes, the collar is really interesting; I don’t think I have seen one like it before. It took a long time polishing all those ruffles! :)
