Hello! I found this while metal detecting the other day. I think it is an axe/hatchet. I am wondering if anyone can tell me information about it? Do you think it is old? I figure it must be a little bit if it has roots growing in it. There was no handle. I tried to clean it, got most of the dirt gone, but the rust stuff I think is there for good. I appreciate your help!

oh, forgot to add that it weighs about 2 pounds, and is 5 inches across and 3 inches from top to bottom of the blade. thanks!

Thanks, it could be that from what I looked up. Any idea of age, or how to get the corrosion off without ruining the blade more?

Don't worry about the blade being ruined because it is neither rare or valuable. Clean it up and enjoy it as part of your metal detecting display. I know full well how much fun metal detecting is, but everything we find isn't valuable. Learn the tricks of the trade and you just might make a profit one day. It happens but keep quiet about it because almost every state has treasure trove laws and they will take it away if you run your mouth about finding it.

Thanks for the tip! Still new to the metal detecting world, learning ins and outs and building my barely there collection.
