    this is a seamstress tool for removing buttons from clothing. you just slide the tool over the button and the tool slices the threads that hold the button to the shirt. the button is than captured in the cup.
    The cup can than be slid off of the tool and the buttons poured out of the cup into your favorite button jar for further future use.

      What a handy-dandy tool. So useful back in the day when every still- useful part of something otherwise worn out was salvaged and reused.

      Sorry valentino97, I don't know the reason why they took the buttons from an old garment, other than the reason for saving the buttons to use on a new garment.
      I do know that it works great, capturing the buttons and making no damage to the garment.
