This came into my possession today. I’m unsure what it is other than the fact it is German made. I’d like to update it with partial painting and partial refinishing but don’t want to diminish value if it is of any real value.
Welcome to CW!! You should get some answers here!! Is it a Bar?? Painting is a dirty word to me!! Nice Piece.

I’m thinking a Hoosier cabinet? Maybe Art Deco design?? Vintage most likely. 30’s-40’s?
I don't believe it's a Hoosier!! Those cabinets had flour sifters spice racks pull out work areas etc. One stop kitchen piece. Maybe revise your photos in post to show your piece.

I'm nobody's expert by any means, but it looks to me like a German variation of a "Hoosier" -- in other words a 'one piece' kitchen unit intended to hold dishware and pantry items. "Kuchen" is indeed German for "kitchen"...?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't paint at it -- such lovely woodgrain in differing solids and veneers (I presume) with such attractive curves, and those way-fun window shapes and moldings -- it'd be such a shame to hide all that under paint (which would indeed lower its value tremendously to me, if I was to think of actually buying something like that) when its original finish looks to be in pretty good shape already -- it shouldn't take much more (maybe less?) work to refresh/renew its existing finish than to "refinish" or <eeek> paint it???
It’s beautiful as is! This is the way it was meant to look showing off the lovely wood.
I totally agree with AnythingObscure: paint would absolutely ruin it’s look and it’s value! So please don’t paint it!
What part of the unit is picture 3 showing? It looks like an insulated bin with a drain at the bottom but can’t tell how it’s supposed to be oriented or where it’s located.
Those cute little “watering can” drawer pulls look inconsistent with the rest of the hardware. With close inspection, can you tell if the pulls have been replaced?
I’m definitely leaning toward a refinishing instead of paint. There has been additional varnish added (badly) that will need to be sanded off. Then I will likely use hemp oil to seal it. And, yes two pieces of the hardware are not original and will not go back on. In picture 3, the air holes are at the back and open area is the top. Was told by seller that it’s a breadbox. ??

The lined cabinet was an ice box
Thank you! I wonder how they kept it cool. Doesn’t seem to be a lined cabinet on either for ice. I’m loving my piece more and more. It WILL NOT be painted but will be lovingly restored
If you will edit your post and put the picture of the cabinet as pic 1, I think it might attract more attention.
Also, to make the pictures orient right side up, do this: “edit “ your picture in some way then when you “post” the picture it will be right side up.
take a moment to read the FAQ's at the bottom it tells you how to orient your picture so it displays properly. Typically losding them directly from a phone or tablet is the problem and not at all a problem associated with this site when loading them.
To quote the FAQ
Rotate your photos. After the shoot, be sure to rotate your photos if needed so they appear right-side up. Images shot with a smartphone or tablet sometimes do not appear properly rotated on our site, so you may want to download photos to your computer first and then rotate them using your computer’s photo-editing software before uploading.
