These buttons are particular favourites of mine, & all have affinities with various types of antique & collectable art glass.
1. From left - two faceted black glass buttons with iridescence, a striped blue & black button with silver foil inclusion, two buttons with light bluish iridescence & a pattern of curved lines (marked on the back - orig. B.G.E), five tiny square black glass buttons with diagonal stripes of copper aventurine, a Venetian millefiori button, a pink button shaped like a bouquet of flowers (each flower was hand painted a different colour), a pale green dome shaped button with aventurine inclusions, three white ball shaped buttons with pastel confetti spatter, a minutely small "paperweight" type button with a pink lampworked flower, & a conical spatter glass button.
2. Victorian ball shaped buttons with various decors such as foil inclusions, aventurine, trailing, & spatter. These buttons were used on waistcoats & added a touch of pizazz to the sombre, dark suits of the era.
3. Stunning set of striped buttons from the Art Deco era, most likely made in Czechoslovakia. I'd love a vase in this decor!
4. I had this velvet waistcoat custom made a couple of years ago. To give it a Victorian flourish, I had the tailor use five antique ball buttons. He was quite intrigued, having never seen anything like them before. They don't match, but who cares when they're this fabulous!
Thanks so much, Mary, glad that you enjoy them! Glass buttons are fun to collect, & useful too... great to use on a special piece of clothing. The waistcoat buttons are particular favourites of mine, they are wonderfully fanciful.
Hi
I collect these glass and agate ball buttons as well. I am interested in who you had to make your Waistcoat? I want to get a few done.
Thanks
Eric
Hi Eric,
I'm located in Australia, so the tailor who made this one for me was in Sydney. I'd recommend that you check out your local tailors. A good tailor who can make a decent bespoke suit should have the know - how to make a waistcoat, & you'll be able to pick out the fabric as well. It is rather expensive, but worth it for the unique garment you'll get. Or, for a cheaper & quicker solution, you could try buying a second - hand waistcoat from a vintage clothing or thrift store, & add your own buttons to customise it.
Kind regards,
Marin.
Thanks --- I have several sets of buttons that would be perfect for a Waistcoat. Have a great day!!!

I noticed your button collection posts not long ago. I'm glad I found them. My Mum had a tin full of buttons - from the war years and before I think (also from the 50's). She made most of her own clothes. To me the buttons were almost magical. Like you, I would sort them into all sorts of categories - colours, sizes, shapes etc., unfortunately, in later years, they were no help with math!
I decided to renew my love of buttons and bought some vintage/antique ones. I have some nice Victorian glass ones, art deco and lucite etc. Thanks IronLace for your button collections - they're stunning.
