I just got this little steam engine a few weeks ago; I've always thought they were cool but this was my first chance at one at a garage sale. I figure it's been used a lot because of what looks like a burn hole in the base. I can't find any markings, so I'd appreciate any info if you have an idea on the maker. I was also wondering if the little whistle at the top would actually sound when it ran.
Thanks.
Great find.
This is called a wobble engine, mainly because the piston and housing wobble to get the steam supply to both ends of the cyl. It appears that this was fired by an alcohol burner. A little glass lab burner with a wick would probably work fine in this engine, and yes the whistle should blow when you get a head of steam. I can't determine exactly who made this model steam engine, possibly a Weeden. You'll find that model steam engines offer a world of interest. Soon we'll make a steam head out of you, like the rest of us. Happy steaming.... hotairfan
Thanks for the info hotairfan. Exactly what I was hoping for.
